He was supported by passing motorists, officers who learned of his trek north and others inspired by his actions. He chatted with complete strangers and cooked for loved ones. In the past six weeks, he ran with friends and former colleagues. Rather than take those days off at the end - and risk upsetting his body or routine - Sobieraski decided to log 26.2 miles on each of his "days off." He built two buffer days into his schedule in case of inclement weather or an injury, but didn't need either one. But Tony was always with me to get me through."īy Sunday, Sobieraski will have completed 50 marathons in as many days. "The Florida sun tried to fry me and West Virginia tried to kill me with those mountains. The nearly 1,300-mile journey was a "giant roller coaster of emotions," he said. Mazurkiewicz, 54, who was survived by his wife, Lynn, four children and three grandchildren, spent much of his 29-year career in RPD's tactical unit. As of mid-week, more than $80,000 has been donated, he said. The run is to honor Mazurkiewicz and to raise funds for his family. Sobieraski was a Rochester police officer for more than three decades and for many years worked with Officer Anthony "Tony" Mazurkiewicz, who was killed last year while working a surveillance detail on Bauman Street as part of the department’s tactical unit. "But this has been just a surreal, incredible experience. "I went into it with the fear of the unknown," said Sobieraski, 56, of Carlton, Orleans County. On Sunday, he will complete his final miles of the nearly 1,300-mile trek. Sobieraski, a former sergeant leading RPD's SWAT team, on April 23 started his 50-day-long journey running one marathon per day from Florida to New York. Then each morning he'd do it again - all in honor of a slain colleague. For 47 straight days, Brett Sobieraski started each morning with a brisk 26.2 mile run.
